I decided to replace my Voigtlander Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.5 lens with the Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M (chrome/brass version). The Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M is a remake of the original 1950s collapsible Elmar f/2.8. This version is the latest and final version of the collapsible Elmar and was in production from 1994-2007.
Since I never shot my Color-Skopar at f/2.5, I feel right at home with the Elmar-M’s f/2.8 aperture. I chose this over a 50mm f2 Summicron of any vintage because I love the Elmar’s softer draw. I usually use the 50mm range as a portraits lens due to its versatility to frame head shots as well as full bodies. The Summicron is just too sharp for what I use the 50mm range for.
Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar lens… beautiful!
